Every June 24, the Inti Raymi is celebrated, a cultural festivity that has its origins in the Inca era itself. The show takes place in three historical settings for the people of Cusco and for their ancestors, the Incas: the temple of Coricancha (the most important religious sanctuary during the Inca era), the Plaza de Armas (which during the Inca period was called Huacaypata and hosted the main religious and civic ceremonies), and the fortress of Sacsayhuamán (an astonishing Inca complex built with colossal walls containing stones weighing up to 120 tons). Learn the difference between each of these spectacles.

| Coricancha, Temple of the Sun | Coricancha is the Temple of the Sun, the most important religious sanctuary of the entire Inca Empire (Tahuantinsuyo). Its name means “Golden Temple” because the Incas worshiped the sun (the god Inti), their main deity, with this precious metal. This temple has the most perfect and best-crafted walls of the vast empire. The chambers where the sun, the moon, the stars, the rainbow, etc., were worshiped are famous. The sacred esplanade of Coricancha is the setting of the first Inti Raymi show every June 24. The Incas also used this sacred place as the stage for the monumental religious festivity. |
| Plaza de Armas, the Huacaypata | The Plaza de Armas of Cusco, during the Inca era, was up to ten times larger and was called Huacaypata, which in Quechua means “place of lamentations.” Here the main civic, military, and religious ceremonies in Cusco, the capital of the Inca Empire, took place. Around it stood the principal Inca temples and palaces. However, during the arrival of the Spanish (16th century), these were destroyed and replaced with churches and colonial mansions. The plaza was reduced following the Spanish urban design of the time. The Incas used the Huacaypata to perform the Inti Raymi ceremony every June 24. Today, the plaza serves as the second setting for the Inti Raymi show in Cusco. |
| Sacsayhuamán, the Inca fortress | Sacsayhuamán is one of the most imposing archaeological sites built by the Incas. It was a religious sanctuary that also served as a fortress during battles between the Spanish and the Incas for control of Cusco. It is located in the upper part of the city, just 1 kilometer away from Cusco. It is famous for its immense stone walls, perfectly carved and fitted together. Some rocks reach up to 120 tons, which is astonishing for visitors. In the 16th century, part of Sacsayhuamán was destroyed by the Spanish to build colonial temples such as the current Cusco Cathedral. Today, Sacsayhuamán is the main setting of Inti Raymi every June 24. Admission to this show requires the purchase of a ticket online. |
